All-weather high-altitude solar tents to be deployed at LAC

The Center has approved all-weather, high-altitude solar power tents to be deployed at an elevation of 17000 feet at the tensed Indo-China border. These tents can conveniently function between minus 35 degrees to 40 degrees temperature.

The guidelines regarding the deployment of these solar tents have been under consideration for the past four years. However, in the backdrop of increasing tensions on the LAC as well as the standoff between India and China in Eastern Ladakh last year, the process was expedited, the officials added.

As per officials knowing about this development, ITBP has been using solar technology at some of the bases but solar-powered tents will assist them sustain below 0 temperature at higher elevation.

“The setting up of more posts is aimed at ensuring that they are not abandoned during extreme snow and cold. Initially, we plan to provide around 50 such all-weather tents. Using technology, the temperature inside these tents will be maintained at 21 degrees Celsius. It shall be able to withstand wind speed of more than 150 Km,” said a senior official.
