Captain Amit Semwal was born to Shri Tara Dutt Semwal and Smt Pushpa Semwal. He belonged to Tehri village in Gharwal district of Uttarakhand. He was commissioned into 16 Dogra of the Dogra Regiment. During the year 1999, Captain Amit Semwal’s unit was deployed in the Rajouri sector of the Kashmir valley.

Based on the information from the intelligent sources the unit decided to launch a search and cordon operation on 13th Dec 1999 led by Captain Amit Semwal. As the operation was underway the troops were fired upon by the heavily armed militants hiding in the area. A fierce gun battle followed thereafter lasting for several hours till the next morning of 14 Dec 1999. During this heavy exchange of fire, Captain Amit Semwal and two soldiers sustained serious injuries. However, Captain Amit Semwal later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.
Captain Amit Semwal was awarded the nation’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, “Kirti Chakra” posthumously.
