
Captain Deepak Sharma was born on 3rd July 1983, to Shri Naresh Kumar Sharma and Smt Indu Sharma. He was from Haryana. He joined the Officer’s Training Academy, Chennai after completing his graduation from Maharishi Dayanand University. He was commissioned on 16th September 2006 into the Corps of Signals. In 2008, he was deputed to serve with 42 Rashtriya Rifles battalion deployed in J&K.

In March 2010 Captain Deepak’s unit was deployed in Pulwama district of South Kashmir and engaged in operations against terrorists. On 4th March 2010, on information from the intelligence, Captain Pawan and his unit were tasked to clear a house where terrorists belonging to the Hizbul group were hiding in Dadsara village of Pulwama. Captain Deepak Sharma courageously entered the suspected house and threw grenades. He managed to kill a terrorist who was hidden in a room. He spotted two more terrorists and attacked them. He was able to kill one of them. During the heavy exchange of fire Captain Deepak sustained a bullet injury on his neck and succumbed to it.
Captain Deepak was a valiant officer who sacrificed his life for the country. He was awarded ‘Kirti Chakra’ posthumously for displaying courage and unfaltering leadership.
