Captain Nirbhay Kumar belonged to the Bhagalpur district of Bihar. He was born on the 15th of May in 1966. He was born to Shri Ayodhya Singh and Smt Vimla Devi. He completed his schooling in Patna and just after completing his schooling he got selected for NDA, the prestigious National Defence Academy and from there he went to Indian Military Academy and got commissioned as a young Lieutenant in the 16 Raj Rif in 1988. Just in a year, his unit was moved to Sri Lanka for Operation Pawan to help Sri Lanka.

Just after the induction of Indian forces in August 1987, the militants were supposed to surrender, but some LTTE militants started a war against the Indian forces. Initially, there was only 54 division of Indian Army but later on, three more divisions were called out in 1989. 16 Raj Rif also came into action in Sri Lanka. They swung into action as soon they came. They were very actively conducting various operations. Lieutenant Nirbhay was promoted as Captain Nirbhay due to involved in War operation. He led his platoon very bravely. But in one such operation against LTTE, he got seriously injured and succumbed to his injuries. He gave his sacrifice for the pride of the nation.
He hadn’t completed 1 year of service. But then also he led very bravely. And was remembered as a fallen soldier. And unfortunately, it was his 23rd birthday which got converted into his martyrdom day.
