Captain Nithin Chavan was born on 4th January 1977 to Shri Prakash Chavan and Smt Sunanda Chavan. He belonged to Pune in Maharashtra. He got selected to join the NDA in 1994. He graduated from IMA and was commissioned as a lieutenant on 13th June 1998 at the age of 21 years. He was commissioned into 115 Engr Regt of the Corps of Engineers. In 1999, Captain Nitin Chavan’s unit was deployed in Rajouri Sector in Jammu & Kashmir.

On 13th September 1999, Captain Nitin Chavan was leading a patrol party in their area of operation. He observed a group of five militants near Majhiari School, in Rajouri Sector, moving suspiciously. In no time Captain Nitin Chavan assessed the situation and in a tactical move divided his party into two groups and moved fast to engage the militants. After a chase, Captain Nitin Chavan and his troops could spot the militants in a maize field, who fired at them on being challenged. A fierce gun battle ensued thereafter which continued for an hour. Captain Nitin Chavan soon spotted two militants who were firing at his troops and realized the need to neutralize them at the earliest. However, during this exchange of fire Captain Nitin Chavan got seriously injured and later succumbed to his injuries.
Captain Nitin Chavan is survived by his father Shri Prakash Chavan, mother Smt Sunanda Chavan, and sister Smita.
