Captain Somesh Shrivastava was born on 23rd September 1971, to Shri Madan Lal. He was a native of the Samastipur district of Bihar. He completed his schooling at Loyola High School, Patna, and Intermediate from Saint Columbus College Hazaribagh. He pursued civil engineering from Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune. After completing his engineering, he joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun in 1994. He got commissioned in June 1996 into the Corps of Engineers and joined the 15 Engineer Regiment.

During March 2001, Captain Somesh was serving in Ladakh while on deputation to Border Roads Organization (BRO). He joined as a platoon commander with BRO in 1999. His unit was part of BRO’s mission of supporting the Armed Forces in their operations by building and maintaining road infrastructure in border areas. The roads there were prone to landslides and often got blocked due to heavy snowfall, the BRO units undertook snow clearance operations under adverse conditions.
On 4th March 2001, Captain Somesh was assigned one such task of snow clearance in the region. Captain Somesh’s vehicle which was moving on an icy patch skidded down the slope resulting in the death of a brave officer. Captain Somesh who an exemplary leader and valiant soldier laid down his life in the line of duty.
