In order to push the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat, or a self-reliant India in the defence sector, the Narendra Modi government is dropping a number of defence import projects being purchased through the Buy (Global) route.
Government initiative comes at a time when the Center is preparing to introduce a new Defense Production and Export Promotion Policy that will provide a road map for strengthening defence production within the country and encouraging its export to friendly foreign nations.
ANI reported that the Ministry of Defence is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting virtually on Wednesday in which all the import projects under Buy (Global) category will be reviewed and are likely to be scrapped or put on hold by the government.
The Prime Minister has personally reviewed the progress of Make in India in the defence sector and has asked officials in both the services and the Ministry of Defence from time to time to take more steps towards promoting the initiative.
