
Chinese President Xi Jinping has appointed General Wang Haijiang the new Commander of the People’s Liberation Army’s Western Theatre Command, which oversees the Indian borders.
Xi is the head of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) the Central Military Commission (CMC). So, he promoted Wang and four other military officers to the rank of General, the highest rank for officers in the Chinese Army, the state-run website chinamail reported on Monday night.
General Wang is the fourth commander to head the Western Theatre Command after the eastern Ladakh standoff started in May 2020.
China’s Western Theatre Command oversees the Xinjiang, the Tibet Autonomous Regions, and the border with India making it the largest geographical region under one command in the PLA.
“The promoted officers are Commander of the PLA Western Theatre Command Wang Haijiang, Commander of the PLA Central Theatre Command Lin Xiangyang, Commander of the PLA Navy Dong Jun, and Commander of the PLA Air Force Chang Dingqiu and President of PLA National Defence University Xu Xueqiang,” an online report said.
