Foreign Secretary says that it’s China’s duty to address unresolved issues in Ladakh

India on Friday said that the onus is on China to address the remaining unresolved issues of the eastern Ladakh. In an interactive session during a virtual meeting, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said that the entire foundation of the relationship was premised on having peace and tranquility along the border.

“We have obviously seen this as a unilateral provocation, we have tried to deal with it through negotiations and through talks, and to some extent, we have addressed some of the issues that had arisen out of this situation that was created by China. But there are still friction points and there are still issues that we need to and we are very clear that until these issues are addressed and our border areas are peaceful and tranquil, we will not be able to go into what is known as a normal relationship as we go forward,” Shringla said.

In his address on India’s foreign policy in the post-Covid world, Shringla said that the rise of China has also placed India in a central role at the geopolitical arena. “It is our largest neighbour and one with which we share more than just a border and proximity. We have also had to confront a specific strategic challenge posed by China and its tactics on our shared borders,” he said.

India and China were locked in a military standoff at multiple friction points in eastern Ladakh since May last year. However, the two sides had withdrawn their troops and weapons from the North and South banks of Pangong lake in February following multiple military and diplomatic talks.
