Fourth Scorpene submarine INS Vela gets delivered to Navy

Indian Navy on Tuesday received its fourth Scorpene submarine from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) under Project P-75. INS Vela was launched on 6th May 2019 and has completed all sea trials which included weapon and sensor trials despite the restrictions due to the pandemic, said the Indian Navy. 

INS Vela will be commissioned soon. Under Project-75 six submarines of Scorpene-class are to be designed, three (Kalvari, Khanderi, and Karanj) of them have already been handed over to the Indian Indian Navy. 

“Vice Admiral Narayan Prasad, Chairman & Managing Director MDL and Rear Admiral KP Arvindan, Chief Staff Officer (Tech), Western Naval Command signed the ‘Acceptance Document’ in the presence of MDL Directors and Navy personnel at MDL. 

The fifth submarine ‘Vagir’ was launched on 12th November 2020 and has started the harbour trials, said MDL.
