Havildar Baljeet Singh was born to Shri Kishan Singh and belonged to Gharaunda Tehsil in the Karnal District of Haryana. He joined the Indian Army on 23rd January 2002. After serving with his parent unit for many years, he was deputed to serve with 50 Rashtriya Rifles battalion, deployed in Jammu and Kashmir. During the year 2019, Havildar Baljeet Singh’s unit 50 RR, was deployed in the Pulwama district of J&K.

On 11th February 2019, the security forces unit had received credible information from the intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in the Ratnipora area of Pulwama district. After analyzing the situation, a decision was taken by the security forces to launch a joint operation to flush out the terrorists. Consequently, the joint team comprising members of the Army’s 50 RR unit, 10 Para, the state police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), and 183/182 battalion of CRPF swung into action and launched the operation in the wee hours of 12 Feb 2019. On being challenged the terrorists opened fire at the security troops and a fierce gun battle ensued thereafter, which continued for several hours. However, during the heavy exchange of fire, Havildar Baljeet Singh along with two more soldiers, Sepoy Saeed and Naik Chander Pal of 10 Para sustained serious injuries. The injured soldiers were shifted to Army’s 92 base hospital at Badamibagh in Srinagar, but Havildar Baljeet Singh succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.
Havildar Baljeet Singh is survived by his parents, wife Aruna, son, and daughter.
