In May 2015, 4/1 Gr was posted once more in J&K near the LoC to fight against infiltration activity. In that area, terrorists were doing regular infiltration which was very well countered by the security forces. On 20th May 2017, there was another such attempt by the militants to infiltrate near the LoC. As the militants tried to infiltrate in Naugam sector of Handwara in the Kupwara district, Havildar Giris Gurung and his soldiers detected suspicious movement and intercepted them. Then a fierce gun battle started which went to few more hours. The militants were heavily armed and were trying to take advantage of thick jungle and rugged terrain to enter our territory. The exchange of fire continued for around 36 hours in which Havildar Gurung and his comrades managed to eliminate 4 militants. But unfortunately, in the operation, we also lost our two brave soldiers along with Havildar Giris. Havildar Giris Gurung was a valiant and committed soldier who laid down his life in the line of his duty.
Havildar Giris was awarded the nation’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, “Kirti Chakra” for his courage, bravery, and supreme sacrifice.
