Havildar Hangpan Dada was born in Borduria village in the Tirap district of Arunachal Prades on 2nd October of 1979. He was a keen sportsman and used to do many physical activities to keep himself fit from his childhood times. Havildar Dada joined the Army and got recruited to the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment on 28 October 1997. He served with 3 Para for six years. Then, he joined Assam Regiment. He went on to serve for the 4 Assam Regiment. After serving few years with 4 Assam, he went on to deputation for Rashtriya Rifles. He went to J&K and served with 35 Rashtriya Rifles. Till this time, he has reached the rank of Havildar and has gained experience in battle craft activities, and was known as a good leader. He was fond of keeping snakes as pets and had to be evacuated by a helicopter once after he was bitten by one of them.

In May 2016, 35 RR was deployed in the Naugam sector in J&K. On 25 May 2016, the unit had received information from intelligence sources about the presence of some terrorists in the Naugam sector. A team was laid to neutralize the terrorists. On the night of 25 May, the team started their operation. Havildar Hangpan Dada was also part of the team. After reaching the suspected area, they started searching for them. After some time, they saw some terrorist movements. Then a heavy gun battle started between the two sides. Havildar Hangpan Dada killed two terrorists with his daring firepower. On seeing this, the other two terrorists fled and hid behind some boulders. Havildar Hangpan Dada spotted them and went towards them and killed one in a very close encounter. But the other one-shot Hangpan Dada injured Havildar Hangpan Dada very badly. But then also, Havildar Hangpan turned and shot the fourth one too. The fight went on to very long hours. Havildar Hangpan Dada succumbed to his injuries.
For showing excellent courage, killing four terrorists without caring for his safety, Havildar Hangpan Dada was awarded ‘Ashok Chakra’ which is the nation’s highest gallantry award during peace-time operations.
