Havildar Roshan Lal belonged to Nichla village in Ghagwal tehsil of Samba district in Jammu and Kashmir. He joined the Army in 1995 and was recruited into 15 JAK LI of the J&K Light Infantry regiment. Havildar Roshan Lal’s unit was deployed in the Rajouri district of J&K.

On 4th February 2018, at around 3 pm Pakistan Army troops initiated unprovoked firing on Indian posts from across the border in the Bhimber Gali, prompting the Indian troops guarding the LoC to retaliate strongly and effectively. The forward Indian posts which came under attack were being manned by the troops of 15 JAK LI. During this heavy exchange of fire Havildar Roshan Lal, who was on duty on one of the forward posts got seriously wounded along with an officer Captain Kapil Kundu and two more soldiers of his unit. They later succumbed to their injuries and were martyred.
Havildar Roshan Lal is survived by his father Shri Des Raj, his wife Smt Asha Devi, and two children named Abhinandan and Artika.
