In response to the European Union’s pledge to assist Ukraine with military aid, Hungary said on Monday that it would not authorize the transportation of weapons through its territory. Hungary has closed ranks with the rest of the EU over tough sanctions against Russia despite Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s efforts to foster closer ties with Moscow.
“We will not allow the transfer of deadly weapons across the Hungarian territory. These shipments can easily become the target of military attacks. Our most important task is to guarantee the safety of the country and the Hungarian people, therefore we must not get involved in the war taking place next door,” Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto wrote on Facebook.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that the bloc would provide 450 million euros for EU member states to purchase weapons for Ukraine.
Several border towns, including Zahony, have constructed public buildings for use as reception centers, where ordinary people donate food and clothes, according to the interior ministry.
