IAF starts integrating R-77 BVRAAMS on Su-30 fleet

The central government to increase stockpiles of air-to-air missiles of the Indian Air Force (IAF) had placed orders under emergency purchase deals in 2019. According to sources, Russia has started shipment of the latest and upgraded inventory of three different types of air-to-air missiles to India to be equipped on Sukhoi-30 MKI and MiG-29 UPG fleet.

As previously reported by idrw.org, the deliveries had started mid last year onwards and as per information provided, IAF’s Su-30 squadrons have now started equipping them with upgraded RVV-AE/R-77 called RVV-SD which as per information from Rosoboronexport has a range of up to 110 km.

IAF Pilots already have started performing combat air patrols with upgraded RVV-SD BVRAAMs. IAF will also get fresh stocks of home-build Beyond Visual Range Astra Mk1 later this year that will be equipped on more squadrons after software upgrades that were performed by HAL on fire control radar to enable integration of Astra Mk1.
