India has decided to enhance the Long-Range Reconnaissance and Observation System (Lorros) along the borders with China and Pakistan, observing frequent incidents of security breachs.
A panel of experts recently approved a revised technical requirement to be implemented by border guarding forces like the Border Security Forces and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), ET has learned.
This sensor system provides long-range surveillance day and night and is capable of recognizing human targets from more than 20 kilometers away. It can also detect moving and stationary vehicles at a minimum distance of 40 Km and 15 Km, respectively.
Acquiring the system with upgraded capabilities is part of an extensive overhaul of the surveillance equipment and devices for the border security forces amid frequent transgression along the India-China border and increased infiltration attempts from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
At present, 180 ITBP border outposts are active and operational along the LAC with each having about 100 soldiers guarding it. The ITBP is seeking to enhance the Lorros and UAV systems to improve patrolling along the border with China.
