As per the information published by Tass on 7th September 2021, a new generation of the BrahMos cruise missile (BrahMos-NG) will be developed at a plant near Lucknow, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told during his business visit to the region.
The BrahMos-NG is slated to complete its trials in 2023. BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile produced by BrahMos Aerospace Russian-Indian joint venture. It was designed by the Russian NPO mashinostroeniya and Indian DRDO. The BrahMos missile has a flight range up to 290 Km with supersonic speed. It operates on the ‘Fire and Forget Principle’. Its cruising height could be up to 15 Km and its terminal altitude is as low as 10 meters.
BrahMos NG (Next Generation) is a mini version based on the existing BrahMos. It will have same range of 290 Km as existing BrahMos and Mach 3.5 speed but it will weigh around 1.5 tons, 5 meters long, and 50 cm in diameter, making it 50 % lighter and three meters shorter than BrahMos.
