Indian Air Force to acquire 6 VHF counter-stealth radars from Alpha Design

Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies Pvt Ltd (ADTL) has bagged a deal to supply 6 VHF (Very High Frequency) radars from the Indian Air Force (IAF) for more than Rs 200 crore after it emerged as an L1 bidder last week.

IAF is planning to replace its aged Soviet-era P-18 early warning radar mounted on Ural-4320 truck chassis that has an unusual feature of counter-stealth capability.

IAF is presently using Medium AESA Powered Radar Arundhar, Ashwini, and Rohini 3D Radar for long-range surveillance, the addition of older VHF-type radars seems to be done keeping in mind their counter-stealth capability.

VHF Radar has a detection range of more than 250 Km and will be truck mounted for mobile deployment. It is still not clear whether it will be based on Local indigenous tech or under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with foreign manufacture.
