The Indian and Australian navies on Wednesday signed a document that provides for consolidating mutual commitment to encourage peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that the document titled ‘Joint Guidance for Australia-India Navy to Navy Relationship’, is aimed at ensuring a shared approach to regional and global security challenges.
The document was signed in a virtual ceremony conducted between Indian Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh and Vice Admiral Michael J Noonan, Chief of Navy of Australian Navy.
“The document is aligned to the 2020 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreed by the prime ministers (of the two countries) and aims to ensure shared approach to regional and global security challenges,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The highlights of document include close cooperation in regional and multilateral fora, including Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS), Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), and Expert Working Groups subordinate to the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus framework,” it further added.
