The Indian Navy today commissioned INS Vela, the fourth Scorpene-class submarine of India, at the naval dockyard in Mumbai, in the presence of chief of naval staff Admiral Karambir Singh.
INS Vela is the fourth of the six submarines under the Kalvari-class submarine Project-75. It has been developed by Mazgon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd in collaboration with M/s Naval Group of France.
Admiral Karambir Singh said, “INS Vela has the ability to undertake an entire spectrum of submarine operations. Given today’s dynamic and complex security situation, its capability and firepower will play a crucial role in enhancing Navy’s ability to protect India’s maritime interests.”
This is the second major commissioning in the Indian Navy in less than a week. As of November 21, the Indian Navy has commissioned the warship INS Visakhapatnam.
The submarine is named after a decommissioned submarine named Vela, which served in the Indian Navy from 1973 to 2010.
