State media in Iran reported on Friday that the country had increased its stockpiles of 60% enriched uranium to 25 kg. “So far, we have produced 25 kilograms of 60% uranium, which, except for countries with nuclear weapons, no other country is able to produce,” Iranian media quoted Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
During April, the United Nations nuclear watchdog reported that Tehran had started enriching its uranium to 60% fissile purity at a nuclear plant above ground in Natanz. In June Iran claimed that it had made 6.5 Kg of uranium enriched to up to 60%.
The current US administration under Joe Biden says it wants to return to the agreement but disagrees with Iran on which steps should be taken and when, with the key issue being what nuclear limits Tehran will accept and what sanctions Washington will lift.
