Iran showcases three ballistic missiles amid nuclear talks

During talks in Vienna aimed at revitalizing Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers, Iran displayed three ballistic missiles at an outdoor prayer avenue in central Tehran on Friday.

The missiles named Dezful, Qiam, and Zolfaghar have ranges up to 1000 kilometers and are already known models, the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said.

Representatives from nations, namely, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and China, that remain in the 2015 nuclear deal are working with Tehran to revive the treaty, which had sought to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for lifting of economic sanctions.

Although there are diplomats from the United States at the Vienna nuclear talks, they do not have direct contact with Iranian officials. During the previous Trump administration in the United States, the accord collapsed in 2018.

The display of these three missiles came on the second anniversary of a ballistic missile attack on bases accommodating US troops in Iraq in retaliation for the US drone strike that killed top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in 2020.
