IS takes responsibility of mosque bombing in south Afghanistan

The Islamic State group took responsibility for the deadly suicide bombing attack on a Shiite Mosque in southern Afghanistan that killed 47 people and injured many more.

Islamic State in a statement posted late Friday on social media said that two of the group’s members shot and killed security guards manning the entrance of the Fatimiya mosque in Kandahar province.

IS’s news agency named the two attackers as Ana al-Khurasani and Abu Ali-Baluchi, both were Afghan nationals.

The attack came a week after a bombing claimed by the local IS affiliate killed 46 people at a Shiite Mosque in northern Afghanistan, raising fears that Islamic State is expanding its foothold in Afghanistan.

The attack which was conducted on Friday was the most lethal attack to have shaken entire Afghanistan since the exit of the United States.

IS carries out regular attacks in its eastern stronghold, but recently has shown signs of expansion, with attacks in the north and Kabul.
