Lance Naik Gurmail Singh was born to an Army veteran Natha Singh and hailed from Makhanpur in the Jammu district of J&K. He was recruited into 24 Punjab of the famed Punjab Regiment. During 2014, his unit was deployed in J&K area engaged in anti-insurgency operations.

On 5th December 2014, six terrorists attacked the army camp of 31 Field Regiment at Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. It was a pre-dawn attack in the wee hours. At 0545 hours, the Army launched a counter-operation to nab the terrorists under the leadership of Lt Col Sankalp Kumar of 24 Punjab. Lance Naik Gurmail Singh was part of the team led by Lt Col Sankalp Kumar. The team immediately swung into action and established stops around the western side of Mahura Gun Area wherein six terrorists had sneaked inside. At 0550 hours Lance Naik Gurmail Singh and the other members of the team came under fire from the terrorists. Lance Naik Gurmail Singh and his comrades retaliated immediately. A gun battle ensued thereafter, all the terrorists were neutralized. However, Lance Naik Gurmail Singh got severely injured during the operation and was martyred.
Lance Naik Gurmail Singh is survived by his wife Parveen and two sons.
