In 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Mahipal was serving with UNMISS (United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan) as a part of the Indian contingent. There were two Indian battalions belonging to 6 Mahar and 9 Mech Inf on the border of Sudan in different areas. The government of Sudan was battling the rebels in Jonglei during that period. On 9th April 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Mahipal was leading a patrol with 32 members in Jonglei. The convoy of soldiers was attacked by 200 rebels in Gumuruk. Lieutenant Colonel Mahipal and his team swiftly came into action and gave a befitting reply to the rebels. However, in the fierce gun battle, Lieutenant Colonel Mahipal and four other soldiers sacrificed their lives.
Lieutenant Colonel Mahipal Singh was a brave officer and a true leader. He was awarded the “Dag Hammarskjold Medal” by the UN for his outstanding courage.
