Lieutenant Colonel Shashikant Kadam was born to Shri Shashikant Kadam and Smt Shubadda Kadam. He was a native of Sarambal village in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. He joined the Services Preparatory Institute at Aurangabad. He got selected to join the prestigious National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Punjab Regiment. After serving few years serving with his parent unit, Lieutenant Colonel Manish was deputed to serve with 22 RR deployed in J&K.

In 2008, Lieutenant Colonel Manish’s unit was deployed in the Baramulla district of J&K and was engaged in counter-insurgency operations. On 16th March 2008, 22 RR team decided to launch a search and cordon operation based on the intelligence report regarding the presence of terrorists in a village in Baramulla. The team was headed by Lieutenant Colonel Manish. To avoid collateral damages, Lieutenant Colonel Manish ordered his troops to move the civilians to some safer place. During that period a terrorist trying to take advantage of the situation was killed by Lieutenant Colonel Manish. However, during the heavy exchange of fire, Lieutenant Colonel Manish got severely injured. He later succumbed to his injuries and got martyred.
Lieutenant Colonel Manish was given the nation’s second-highest peace-time gallantry award ‘Kirti Chakra’ for displaying indomitable courage in the battle-field.
