
Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (retd.) took charge as the Governor of Uttarakhand on Thursday. He succeeded ex-Governor Baby Rani Maurya, who tendered her resignation.
Lt Gen Gurmit Singh is a highly decorated officer who retired as deputy chief of the Indian Army in February 2016 after nearly four decades of service. He held prestigious appointments of deputy chief of Army Staff, adjutant general, and corps commander of strategic XV Corps that overlooks the Line of Control in Kashmir.
During his tenure in the Army, he was part of many expert groups, joint working groups, annual dialogues, and China study group meetings for over a decade.
Lt Gen Singh is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff Course and National Defence College. He has also done two M.Phils. from Chennai and Indore universities besides being a research scholar on Indo-China Boundary issue in the Institute of Chinese Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, during his study leave from the Indian Army.
Besides the fresh appointment, President Kovind also ordered reshuffling of governors of some states like shifting Banwarilal Purohit from Tamil Nadu to Punjab. Jagdish Mukhi, the present governor of Assam, has been appointed to discharge the duties of the governor Nagaland in addition until a fresh appointment is made.
