
Major Amit Deswal was born on 15th January 1985 to an army veteran Subedar Major Rishi Ram Deswal and Smt Vedvati. He belonged to Surheti village in the Jhajjar district of Haryana. He did his schooling from Kendra Vidyalaya and completed his graduation from Guru Govind Singh College Delhi in 2004. Major Amit was commissioned on 10th June 2006 and he joined the elite 21 Para (SF) unit in January 2011. In January 2016, he got posted to Manipur and got involved in Operation Hifazat II.

On 13th April 2016, at 3:30 am the 21 Para troops launched an operation against a splinter group of Naga insurgents who were not part of a peace process with the government. The assault team was led by Major Amit Deswal and after the troops intensively searched, they finally spotted militants who opened fire on them. Major Amit killed one of the insurgents and seized AK-47 guns. Major Amit and his troops continued searching the area and tracked the militants 20 km away from the highway. Major Amit led from the front and engaged the militants in the gun battle. However, in the heavy firing, Major Amit got shot twice and he attained martyrdom.
For his bravery and fighting spirit, Major Amit was awarded the ‘Sena Medal’ posthumously.
