OPERATION VIJAY:
While Pakistan was preparing for the war, he was about to start his holidays with his family, and he called them to Srinagar on 12th of May, as per the plans and an usual routines. On 13th of May he got the orders to went to the Kargil with his regiment. 315 Fd Regiment was the first artillery regiment to be deployed in the war. He was 2IC of the regiment. After reaching there, he briefed his soldiers and got the insights about the terrain. And the main role of their regiment was to provide the extreme cover to the infantry regiments who had to launch the assault at the top. So they have to operate mostly in the night time, that’s why it was very difficult to damage the target accurately and the possibility of hitting their own men was also present there because of that type of terrain. But their team managed to complete their tasks accurately. And there were many instances where they would have stopped firing, if they have thought about their life. But the morale of the boys was at par that they didn’t think about their comfort because if they had stopped firing, our Infantry Regiments would have been back foot. They have to constantly change their positions of firing, so that the enemy couldn’t know their exact location. There was a very much significant role of his regiment in the victory of Tololing, which was the first victory of Indian Army, for which many lives had been gone. On the night of 2nd July, there was a very high shelling from Pakistan side, because Indian Army was scaling the tops with great courage. It was very hard for the Artilleries to continue fire, but in spite of thinking about their life, Major motivated his every soldier and told them if we will not continue this now, we will lose our brother who are leading the charges, and suddenly while he was firing from his position, a shell fell near his right arm, and he was fully injured, and some parts of the shell went inside his body. But he continued firing till his last breath and laid down his life for the country. He was awarded the Sena Medal posthumously, for doing his service, without thinking about his personal safety.
He was survived by two daughters and his wife. His elder daughter, Neha, 33, is married to an Army Officer and younger daughter Diksha, 29 has published a book named, ‘Letters from Kargil’ in which various letters written by soldiers while fighting for the country are mentioned.
