
Major P Shyam Sundar was born on 2nd August 1975 to Shri J Panchapagesan and Smt P Lakshmi, in Sishu Mangal, Kolkata. He completed his schooling at Andhra Association School Kolkata. He got selected for National Defence Academy and later joined the prestigious Indian Military Academy. After completing his training from IMA in 1997, he got commissioned into 19 Madras of the Madras Regiment. He later joined 10 Madras and continued serving with the unit before his stint with 38 RR.

During 2006, Major Shyam’s unit 38 RR was deployed in the Poonch sector engaged in operations against the militants. On 5th March 2006, credible intelligence sources informed his unit about the presence of terrorists in a forest close to Bhimber Gali in Poonch district. The team decided to launch a search and destroy operation against the terrorists under the leadership of Major Shyam. Major Shyam and his team cordoned the suspected area, followed by a fierce gun battle with the Indian Army troops eliminating some of the terrorists. However, during the heavy exchange of fire, one of the soldiers got injured. Major Shyam, disregarding his own safety moved the wounded soldier to a safer area but got himself hit by a bullet. Later he succumbed to his injury.
Major Shyam was awarded the prestigious ‘Sena Medal’ posthumously for displaying true leadership.
