Major Raman Dada belonged to Jalandhar in Punjab. He completed his schooling at Apee Jay school in Jalandhar and his graduation from DAV College, Jalandhar. He joined the Indian Army in 1991. He was commissioned into 11 Sikh of the Sikh Regiment.

In 1999, Major Raman Dada’s unit was posted in Assam under 21 Mountain Division. On 1st May 1999, the security forces received information from the intelligence about the presence of some hardcore militants from the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Biswanath Chariali reserve forest area in central Assam’s Sonitar district. The assault team was led by Major Raman. As the troops approached the hideout, the militants opened fire at them, ensuing in a gun battle. Major Raman engaged with a militant in hand-to-hand combat and managed to kill him but he himself got severely injured. He refused to be evacuated and shot dead another fleeing militant before succumbing to his injuries.
Major Raman Dada was a courageous officer and for his bravery, he was awarded ‘Kirti Chakra’ posthumously.
