MAJOR SALMAN AHMAD KHAN: SHAURYA CHAKRA

Major Salman Ahmad Khan belonged to Kanpur and was born on 22nd October 1978. He adored his dream of joining the defence forces to serve his nation. At an age of 22, he got commissioned into the Indian Army. There he joined Sikh Regiment, which is a well-decorated regiment from pre-independence time to post-independence and continuing its saga till now. For his determination and great efforts in the service to the nation, he got promoted to the Major in subsequent years.

After serving many years with his parent unit, he went to 6 RR for deputation, to engage more in counter-insurgency operations. In 2005, his unit 6 RR was deployed in J&K, to engage in terrorist operations and to maintain peace in the area. On 5th May 2005, their unit got input about some terrorist’s presence in a village in Kupwara district. An operation was launched as the input was so sure, a team was made and was led by Major Salman. After reaching the suspected area, they cordoned the area well and waited for terrorists. In some piece of time, terrorists felt the presence of security forces, upon being challenged, terrorists opened fire upon the force and a heavy gunfight started. Major Salman killed one terrorist with his heavy firing. Then he saw another terrorist and he was fleeing off the spot, he chased down and shot him. In the meantime, while Major Salman was heading and killing the running one, terrorists hiding in a house, targeted Major Salman and shot many rounds of fire upon him. This made Major Salman seriously wounded but despite thinking about his injury, he lobbed a grenade at the terrorist, who shot him. In this way, he washed up all the terrorists, but he had lost heavy blood, and he succumbed to his injuries. He laid the supreme sacrifice for his country and its men. He fought till the last enemy was surviving.

His bravery was rewarded with ‘Shaurya Chakra’, the third-highest peacetime gallantry award.
