Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal was born on 18th December 1987 to Shri OP Dhoundiyal and Smt Saroj Dhoundiyal, in Dehradun. Major Vibhuti completed his schooling from St. Joseph School, Dehradun and his graduation from DAV college, Dehradun. After graduation he cleared his Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam and was commissioned into the Army in the year 2011.

After serving with his parent unit for few years, Major Vibhuti was deputed to serve with 55 RR Battalion, deployed in J&K. During 2018-19, his unit was deployed in Pulwama district of J&K which would engage in operations against the militants on a regular basis. Following the Pulwama attack incident of 14th February 2019, the security forces were maintaining a state of high alert in the area. On 17th February 2019, the security forces received information from the credible sources regarding the presence of terrorists in Pinglan village of Pulwama. 55 RR along with Special Operation group of J&K Police launched a combine search operation. The assault team was led by Brigadier Harbir Singh and Major Vibhuti was part of the team. A fierce gun battle continued for 20 hours and many terrorists responsible for Pulwama attack were eliminated. However, during the heavy exchange of fire eleven soldiers were injured including Major Vibhuti, Sepoy Ajay Kumar, Sepoy Hari Singh and Havildar Sheo Ram, who unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.
Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal was awarded ‘Shaurya Chakra’ posthumously.
