The first Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MR-SAM) will be handed over to the Indian Air Force at its base in Jaisalmer. MR-SAM is developed jointly by the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria will attend the induction ceremony, that will be conducted after an IAF aircraft lands on the highway in Barmer as a part a of mock emergency landing.
The MR-SAM has a range of 70 Km and can hit aircraft, helicopters, and also incoming missiles. It has a speed of Mach-2 and will be useful in protecting Indian armed forces’ assets. This deal between IAF and DRDO to build the MR-SAM system was signed a decade ago.
The MR-SAM will be a significant addition to India’s air-defence system, to safeguard the Indian Armed Forces and prevent missile attacks. Once the MR-SAM is ready, its mass production will be commenced.
