
Naib Subedar Kankanwadi Duradundi Irappa belonged to the Belgaum district of Karnataka. He was recruited into 19 Maratha Li of the famed Maratha Light Infantry Regiment. In 2014 his unit was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for counter-insurgency operations.

On 07 April 2014, intelligence reports informing about the presence of militants in Zunarishi hamlet of Kupwara district of North Kashmir were received. After assessing the situation, the security forces decided to launch a joint operation of the Army and police at night. The joint team comprised of soldiers of 19 Maratha Li and a special operation group of Handwara district police. A fierce gun-battle ensued between the troops and the militants. Naib Subedar Kankanwadi got injured severely during the battle and was evacuated and was rushed to 168 Military Hospital at Drugmulla. However, he later succumbed to his injuries and was declared martyred.
Nb Sub Kankanwadi was given the gallantry award “Sena Medal” posthumously for his bravery, devotion to duty, and service to the nation.
