
Naik Deepak Nainwal hailed from Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand. He was born to Sri Chakradhar Nainwal and Smt. Parvati Devi. After completing his education, Naik Deepak joined Indian Army and got recruited into the 1 Mahar Regiment after completing his training successfully. After serving for few years with his parent unit, Naik Deepak deputed to serve with 1 RR battalion deployed in J & K for counter-insurgency operation to maintain peace in the valley.

In 2018, 1 RR was deployed in the Kulgam district of J & K. They were engaging with terrorists regularly. On 10th April 2018, their unit got information about the presence of terrorists in a house in Wani Mohalla in Khudwani village of Kulgam district. Based on the information a decision was taken by the security forces to launch an operation to flush out the terrorists. The operation was launched by a joint team of 1 RR Battalion of the Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of J & K Police, and CRPF at around 11:30 pm on 10th of May. Naik Deepak was part of the team of RR.
The joint team swung into action and they cordoned the suspected area. On being challenged the terrorists started firing upon the troops and a fierce gun battle started which went onto for 12 long hours. The gunbattle continued for over 12 hours till the morning of 11 Apr 2018. Naik Deepak Nainwal was firing very accurately with his other comrades. However, during the heavy exchange of fire Naik Deepak Nainwal got hit in his spine area and sustained serious injuries.
He was shifted to Delhi’s Army Research and Referral hospital for treatment and then taken to a military hospital in Pune, for further specialized care. Despite all efforts to save him, Naik Deepak Nainwal lost the battle for life and succumbed to his injuries on 20th May 2018.
