
Naik Rambeer Singh Tomar was born on 15th August 1970 to Shri Rajendra Singh Tomar and Smt Urmila Devi in a small village in Uttar Pradesh. Naik Rambeer got recruited on 28th July 1989, into the 15th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment. After few years of his service to his parent unit, Naik Rambeer was later deputed to 26 RR deployed in J&K.

On 3rd March 2001, Naik Rambeer’s unit received information from the intelligence about the presence of terrorists in a house in a village in Doda district. The security forces planned to launch a well-coordinated operation to eliminate terrorists. Naik Rambeer was part of the assault team. The security forces surrounded the suspected area and terrorists opened fire on them indiscriminately. The security forces decided to storm inside the house where terrorists were hiding and firing. Naik Rambeer volunteered to lead the team and displayed courage by killing two terrorists using a grenade. He then managed to kill the third one by shooting him. However, in the heavy firing from both sides, Naik Rambeer got a bullet shot in his eyes. Despite bleeding profusely, he managed to kill the fourth terrorist. But later he succumbed to his injuries.
The brave soldier was given the nation’s highest peacetime gallantry award, ‘Ashok Chakra’ posthumously for displaying exemplary courage on the battle field.
