
Naik Ranjeet Singh was born on 1st July 1960 in Dughra village in Gorakhpur to Shri Ram Shankar Singh. He got recruited into the Indian Army on 20th July 1979. He was inducted into 5 Para of the famed Parachute Regiment.

In 1989 Naik Ranjeet’s unit was deployed in the Sri Lankan theatre of operations 1988. The Indian forces were deployed in Sri Lanka to fight against the insurgencies there. By April 1989, the Indian forces had undertaken many operations against LTTE but the war was far from over. On 8th April 1989, Naik Ranjeet’s unit, 5 Para got information about militants hiding in a hideout. Naik Ranjeet was part of the assault team. The troops divided themselves into two groups but they came under heavy fire from the militants. A fierce gun battle ensued as the consequence. Naik Ranjeet managed to kill one of the terrorists and wounded another. But a third militant shot him and he got severely injured and got martyred.
The brave soldier was given ‘Vir Chakra’ posthumously for showing his valour on the battlefield.
