Naik Shinde Shankar Chandrabhan belonged to Bhayale village in Chandwad tehsil of Nasik, Maharashtra. He was recruited into Madras Light Infantry Regiment and later served with 41 Rastriya Rifles. He was a part of the UN Peacekeeping mission in Southern Sudan in 2012. During 2015-2016, Naik Shinde was serving with 41 Rastriya Rifles unit, which was engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir).

On 13th February 2016, the unit received information from the intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the area. A quick decision was taken to launch a search and destroy operation to deal with terrorists. Naik Shinde was the part of this operation. The team reached the suspected area and heavy firing ensued between the two sides. The Army was successful in eliminating 5 terrorists of Lakshar-e-Taiba. However, Naik Shinde was seriously injured during the cross firing. Later he succumbed to his injuries.
The brave soldier was awarded “Shaurya Chakra” posthumously for his supreme sacrifice.
