To handle it efficiently, the responsibilities have to be divided. That’s where the directorates of NCC come into play. NCC at the state level is divided into directorates which covers all the states and union territories. A state or group of states forms a directorate. There are a total of 17 directorates of NCC in India which play a major role training cadets all over India. Smaller states or union territories are combined together to form a directorate. Each directorate is under the command of an officer of rank brigadier.

The following are the 17 directorates:-
- Andhra Pradesh & Telangana

Headquarters: Patna - Delhi
Headquarters: Delhi - Gujrat
Headquarters: Ahmedabad - Jammu & Kashmir

GROUP
The directorates are further subdivided into groups depending on the size of the state. Each group is handled by an officer equivalent to the rank Colonel or equivalents to the ranks in Air Force and Navy.
BATTALION
A group comprises NCC battalions and NCC Air Force and Naval Units. Each group is operated by a Commanding Officer. Apart from Commanding Officer, they have an Administrative Officer and a Training Officer of rank Lt. Colonel or a Major. A battalion also has a JCO (junior commissioned officer) of the rank Subedar Major and NCO’s ( Non-Commissioned Officers) as “Permanent Instructors” PI staff.
COMPANY
There is a smaller unit after the battalion known as Company which is found in colleges. Cadets of the same company should be in the same college, however there is a provision known as “open vacancy” where cadets from different colleges can join the NCC unit of other colleges. The company commander in NCC is a lecturer of the same college. They are given three months training at Officer’s training College in Kamptee.
TROOP
If an NCC unit is available in schools, that is known as NCC Troops. A troop generally consists of 100 Cadets from a single school. A troop commander is the teacher of the same school and they are also provided a three months training at Officer’s training college, kamptee.
Lecturers of the company and troops are called Associate NCC Officers (ANO).
You can see each unit has certain responsibilities which are perfectly handled by the respective in charge. So the way NCC has been organised is well planned, handled and organised.
