“Rank does not confer privilege or gives power. It imposes responsibility.” A rank is a matter of pride in anyone’s life. Rank is a reflection of your achievements and your skills. Not everyone gets the chance to wear a rank. Those who work hard for it, eventually earn it.
In NCC, ranks can be worn on either shoulder or on arms. Shoulder ranks are the highest level ranks. there are three types of shoulder ranks which are:-
- Senior under officer:- It has a button and two silver strips(air wing)/golden strips(army wing) and “NCC” badge. The strips can be black if the cadet has not attended any national camp. There are usually two SUO’s(1 SD &1 SW) in one NCC unit. It is the highest rank one can get in NCC.
- Junior under officer:- It consists of one button and one strip. This is the second highest rank in NCC.
- Company quartermaster sergeant (CQMS) :- It is the third highest rank. It consists of a button, a national emblem and an eagle (for air wing) amd “NCC ” badge.
Coming to arms rank we have the following three categories:-

- Sergeant(SGT) :- it is the highest arms rank and has three “V” lines. Arms rank are worn on the left arm. A SGT should be a second year or a third year cadet and was a former Corporal(CPL).
- Corporal (CPL) :- next to SGT is CPL and has two “V” linings. A CPL also belongs to second year or third year. He/ she should’ve been a former L/CPL.
- Lance Corporal(L/CPL) :- This is the lowest rank of arms and has a single “V” line.Cadets having none of the ranks are just called as cadets and they are usually first year cadets
