
Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra was awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal. Neeraj Chopra is a Subedar in the prestigious Rajputana Rifles.
Param Vishisht Seva Medal or PVSM is the highest non-gallantry decoration bestowed on defence personnel. It is usually accorded to 3-star officers for distinguished service to the country.
Chopra started his training at the army’s sports institutions and was selected to join the service as part of Mission Olympic, an initiative to identify young athletes and give them a secure career so that they can concentrate on sports.
As part of the 73rd Republic Day celebration, the President of India approved awards of 384 gallantry and other defence decorations, including 12 Shaurya Chakras. Over 189 medals of gallantry have been awarded to the central and state police forces. The highest number of medals have been awarded to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, involved in counter-terror operations.
