PM Modi emphasizes on the need for indigenous R&D in defence sector

In an effort to promote indigenous research and development in defence manufacturing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said innovative and unique products with the ability to shock opponents can only be developed through indigenous efforts. 

PM also mentioned that a significant portion from the budget has been earmarked for Research & Development (R&D) in defence sector which he called is the blueprint to achieving self-reliance or ‘Atmanirbharta’. 

In his remarks to industry leaders and government officials during a virtual seminar, PM Modi pointed out that India is a large weapons importer and that this has led to corruption allegations and delayed acquisitions harming the armed forces. 

“Uniqueness and surprise elements can only happen when the equipment is developed in your own country,” PM said during the virtual seminar. He also underlined that India is moving towards becoming a weapon exporting country.
