Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed the Indian Coast Guard on its Raising Day saying that the outstanding team of professionals steadfastly secure the country’s coasts and also lead humanitarian efforts.
“Best wishes to the Indian Coast Guard family on their Raising Day. An organisation of great strategic importance, our Coast Guard is an outstanding team of professionals, who steadfastly secure our coasts and also are at the forefront of humanitarian efforts,” PM wrote on Twitter.
Indian Coast Guard was officially established on February 1, 1977, by the Coast Guard Act, 1978. This year marks the 46th Raising Day of the Indian Coast Guard. Indian Coast Guard is the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world.
ICG presently has 158 ships and 70 aircraft. In 1978, ICG had only 7 surface platforms and now its target is to have 200 surface platforms by 2025.
One of the main objectives of the Indian Coast Guard is the prevention of smuggling through maritime routes in its area of responsibility (AOR). It is also in charge of protecting the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the country.
