Maj Ajay Singh Jasrotia was born on 31st March, 1972. He was from Jammu. His father was Shri Arjun Singh Jasrotia and mother Smt. Beena Jasrotia. He completed his graduation from Commerce College in Jammu. He was a boy belonging to military background as his grandfather Lt Col Khajoor Singh served in the Army and he served as a DIG in BSF. This made him interested and passionate towards joining the prestige Armed forces.He got selected through the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) and joined the Army in 1996 at the age of 23 years.

He was commissioned in 13 J&K Rifles of the J & K Rifles Regiment, which is an infantry Regiment and known for the gallant soldiers and many battle exploits. During 1999, Maj Ajay Singh Jasrotia’s unit was deployed in Sopore in J & K. He was moved to Drass region in June for Operation Vijay.

OPERATION VIJAY: 15 June 1999

Under the command of 56 mt. Brigade, Maj Ajay Singh Jasrotia’s unit moved to Drass region in June 1999 . In Drass, the enemy had secured Tololing, Point 5140, Point 5060, Point 4700 ridgeline extending towards northwest till Point 5353 and Tiger Hills. The mission of the intruders was to block the Kargil road in order to not to allow the Indian forces to utilize their important features and locations.

On 15 June,1999 , the Major’s location was under heavy shelling and huge artillery. During the shelling, 6 of the men were injured. They all immediately ran for the cover. Major commanded men to take cover under the administration base. This was a boost for the intruders but astonishment for the unit.

While everyone was in shock, Major decided to rescue his men. He immediately prepared his troops to evacuate the men. During the evacuation, the major was injured and was bleeding profoundly. He kept doing his duty and rescued all the 6 men but he was martyred.

The major was awarded a Sena Medal for his extraordinary passion of duty.
