The Rezang La battle memorial has been overhauled and now it is all set to be inaugurated by the defence minister next week. Rezang La battle is of historic importance as it reflects the bravery of Indian soldiers who fought courageously against the intruding Chinese soldiers in the 1962 war.
Originally, the previous structure was erected in Chushul in 1963, close to the site of the battle. Now the area has been expanded which also includes an auditorium and photo gallery in honor of the troops of the 13th Kumaon regiment’s Charlie company that came under Chinese attack but fought courageously with all their might.
The renovated memorial site’s auditorium is named after Major Shaitan Singh, who led the troops into battle at posts situated at more than 17000 feet in the shivering November winters in the year 1962.
The memorial is near the Kailash range that was occupied by the Indian Army in August 2020. This capture led to the disengagement of troops at Pangong Tso’s finger area. Presently, reaching the site is very difficult due to the complex permission system that is required by the civil administration and army owing to the border tension between India and China.
