
Rifleman Abdul Hamid Chara was born on 8th March 1975 to Shri Laldin Chara and belonged to the Dardpura village in Lolab Valley of Kupwara district of J&K. Rifleman Abdul Hamid joined the 162 Infantry Battalion (TA) and was posted with 18 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion.

During June 2007, Rifleman Abdul Hamid was serving with 162 Inf Bn (TA), which was operating along 18 RR Battalion, engaged in counter-insurgency operation in J&K. Based on the information received from the intelligence, a search and destroy operation was launched on 12th June 2007 in the Ander Nar area of Gagal in Kupwara district falling under the AOR (Area of Responsibility) of the unit. As the operation was underway, Rifleman Abdul Hamid observed two terrorists trying to flee. He allowed them to come within five meters and noticed that terrorists were carrying Thuraya Satellite telephone. He informed his platoon commander on radio set and crawled under dense undergrowth to cut off the escape route. The terrorists spotted him and fired at him and his comrades. He received multiple gunshots and got severely injured. However, despite being seriously injured, he continued to bring down accurate fire and crawled down the hill to block the escape route. He then managed to eliminate one terrorist but eventually succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.
Rifleman Abdul Hamid was given the gallantry award, ‘Shaurya Chakra’ posthumously for his dauntless courage, camaraderie, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice.
