Rifleman Sunil Rai belonged to a remote village of Kalimpong in Darjeeling, a well-known tourist spot of West Bengal. At the age of 19, he joined the Indian Army and got into 2/11 GR. Gorkha Rifles had been India’s most decorated Rifle of Indian Army.

During 2016, 2/11 GR was posted at the Turtuk sector of the Ladakh region. The area was always kept on alert because of the factors affecting the peace of our country. The troops of 2/11 GR had to maintain regular patrols in the area. Unfortunately, on 25th March, heavy snowfall started in the area. And the party was struck by the avalanche while they were on their way. That was so disastrous, Rifleman Sunil Rai was trapped under the snow, and lost contact with other parties.
A search was started to find him.But he was recovered on next day. After burying a long day under the snow, he could not be saved and laid down his life for the country.He is survived by his parents and siblings.
