
Rifleman Varun Katal was born to an army veteran Sub Anchal Singh and Smt Pinki Rani. He belonged to Mawa village in Rajpura Tehsil of Samba district of Jammu & Kashmir. He was recruited into 8 JAK LI of the famed Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment. In Nov 2018, Rifleman Varun Katal’s unit, 8 JAK LI battalion was deployed in the Sunderbani sector near LOC.

On 10th November 2018, Rifleman Varun Katal was manning one of the forward posts in Sunderbani Sector and there was unprovoked ceasefire violation was initiated by the Pakistani forces in the Khour area. During the firing Rifleman Varun Katal got injured critically. Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively resulting in cross-border firing for many hours from both sides. However, Rfn Varun Katal later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.
Rifleman Varun Katal is survived by his father Sub Anchal Singh (Retd.) and mother Smt Pinki Rani.
